Unbreakable Identities, in Collaboration with Gallotti&Radice, 2023

SIMON BERGER

Swiss contemporary artist working with glass through controlled impact.

With a hammer as his sculptural tool, he creates artworks, sculptures, installations and site-specific works in which material, light and perception become inseparable.

The Persistence of Presence

National Gallery of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Sarajevo

12 September – 10 October 2026

In The Persistence of Presence, Simon Berger enters into dialogue with Ferdinand Hodler and the history of the Gallery's Hodler collection, safeguarded through the siege of Sarajevo. For the first time in more than twenty years, works by Hodler are on public view in the city.

Berger translates selected figures and motifs into his own material language: fractured glass as a way of looking at what remains, and at what is carried forward.

Projects

Simon Berger's practice moves between the image and the space around it.

Exhibitions — Works and installations from his own practice, shown in museums and galleries.

Public Projects — Permanent and temporary works shaped by public space, scale and encounter.

Architecture & Commissions — Site-specific works in dialogue with architecture, hospitality and design.

Process

Impact becomes image. Berger works directly into the glass. Each impact changes the structure of the material: up close a field of fractures, from a distance a face. In his hands, the hammer becomes an instrument of drawing.
