artworks

A selection of Simon Berger's works in glass. The portraits hang on the wall: faces, animals, figures from mythology and architecture, each resolving into an image as the viewer steps back. The sculptures stand in the room, with the motif held inside the glass and changing from every side. Together they show how far an image in glass can reach, from the flat pane to the object.

Portraits

Each portrait begins as a flat pane of glass. Through controlled impact, the fractures build up until a face emerges: up close, a web of lines; from a distance, an image. Alongside the human face, the motifs range from animals to figures of mythology and architecture.

Sculptures

In the sculptures, the image leaves the wall. Fractured glass is layered into cubes and spheres, so that the motif sits inside the object and changes with every step around it. Front, side and back show three different works, held in one.

Architectural works

Site-specific works developed in dialogue with architecture, design, hospitality and commissioned contexts.

Each project begins with its context: an architectural surface, a sequence of spaces, the history of a place or an identity connected to it. Berger develops the work from the site itself. Projects take the form of permanent glass installations, freestanding sculptural works, integrated wall or window pieces, or series conceived for a particular interior.
