At the centre of Echoes lay a work on the gallery floor. Simon Berger arranged hundreds of glass shards on a wooden panel, used like a canvas. As visitors moved around it, the shards shifted between an abstract field of glass and the side profile of a human face.

The work marked a significant step in his practice. In his wall pieces, the image emerges from controlled impact on a single pane. Here, it comes from the contours and placement of each shard. The piece sits between sculpture and image, and the portrait depends on where the viewer stands.

The portraits on the walls formed the counterpoint: up close they dissolve into individual fractures, from a distance they come together as a face. On the floor and on the walls, the exhibition turned on the same question: how distance and perspective shape what we see.
