At Transformation, visitors walked on glass. Simon Berger covered the entire gallery floor with sheets of glass, prepared but still untouched. With every visitor who walked across it, new cracks appeared, and over the course of the exhibition a collaborative work grew beneath their feet.

The idea comes from Berger's own process. He usually sets his fractures with a hammer, but at times he uses his feet to draw a different kind of crack from the glass. In Basel, the audience took on that role. It was the first time he involved visitors so directly in the making of a work.

A second installation also drew the viewer in. Mirror shards lay on the floor in a seemingly random arrangement. Looking up, visitors saw how the shards caught the light and projected a portrait onto the wall. Alongside these new works, the exhibition showed his portraits and layered glass sculptures.

Transformation grew out of the exhibitions Berger had realised since his first show at Artstübli in 2019. It invited visitors to see breakage in a new light: as something that can create value.
