The Persistence of Presence National Gallery of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Sarajevo 12 September – 10 October 2026
In The Persistence of Presence, Simon Berger enters into dialogue with Ferdinand Hodler and the history of the Gallery's Hodler collection, safeguarded through the siege of Sarajevo. For the first time in more than twenty years, works by Hodler are on public view in the city.
Berger translates selected figures and motifs into his own material language: fractured glass as a way of looking at what remains, and at what is carried forward.

Process
Impact becomes image
Berger works directly into the glass. Each impact changes the structure of the material: up close a field of fractures, from a distance a face. In his hands, the hammer becomes an instrument of drawing.
