LE PORTE DELLA PERCEZIONE
Museo Civico di Sansepolcro, Sansepolcro, IT
2 July — 30 September 2023
Solo Exhibition, Curated by Sandrine Welte and Pasquale Lettieri. In collaboration with Cris Contini Contemporary
In 1925, Aldous Huxley wrote that Piero della Francesca's Resurrection in Sansepolcro was “the greatest painting in the world”. During the Second World War, his essay played a role in saving the town from bombing.
Before every exhibition, Simon Berger visits the place where it will be shown. In Sansepolcro, he took his cue from this history and from Huxley's later book The Doors of Perception, published in 1954. The result was an exhibition about the act of looking itself.
Berger built a labyrinth that guided visitors through the rooms and played with illusion and vision. Along the way, the works came apart and came together again: separate frames combined into a coherent whole. In a series of portraits of Huxley, Berger went further than ever before and let the author's face gradually dissolve into abstraction.
